Setting up port forwarding on your router

To set up port forwarding on you router to be able to access Rovio from an external network.

You need to determine the make and model of your router. Once you have that information, you can go to a port forwarding information website such as PortForward.com for help dealing with your specific router.

Or, refer to the user manual for you router to determine the port forwarding information.

  1. If using PortForward.com, note down your external IP address which is displayed at the bottom of the main page (“Your external IP address is ___.___.___.___”).

  2. Click on the link for Routers, and then select your router from the list of routers (sorted alphabetically by brand).

If you are not using portforward.com, you can verify your external IP address by logging into your router’s status page. Refer to your router’s user manual on accessing you router’s settings to display your external IP.

  3. From the list of available routers and firewalls on the following page, select an application from the list that appears. It doesn’t matter which application you choose as the setup is the same for all of them, with only the port numbers that differ.

    NOTE
: Rovio uses port 80 and port 554 by default. To get the audio/video feed (“stream”) working properly, you will most likely need to change port 80 to another port as most ISPs block traffic on port 80. To change the port that Rovio uses, go to Rovios Network tab, and enter the new port number, for example 8080.

  4. Log into your router’s interface. For most routers, this is a webpage which you access that allows you to change you router’s settings (as it is for Rovio).

You will need to add two entries to the port fowarding section. Locate the port forwarding settings and add the following two ports: Port 554 and the web port (default 80).

NOTE: Refer to Examples of network configurations for reference on specific network setups, for instance, if you have a non-typical setup.

  5. Enter the following information in the appropriate fields to you router’s settings:

  6. Verify that the port forwarding works by using your browser to navigate to the external IP address (specified on www.PortForward.com or in your router’s status page).

  7. Type in the external IP address in your browser’s address bar. If you see Rovio’s interface, you have successfully set up your port forwarding.

If you do not see Rovio’s interface, you should try a different web port (other than port 80 or the port you tried)

  8. Now you can set up you dynamic DNS settings (your URL) if you want to. This allows you to access Rovio using a URL so you don’t have to type in your IP address every time you want to log into Rovio. For instance, you can create an address such as johndoe.myrovio.com. by registering it.
